Learn to Draw – with James Budden
An 8 week evening course for beginners onwards.
Tuesdays 7.30 -10pm 15th May – 3rd July
At The Small Hall, Digby Hall, Hound St, Sherborne DT9 3AE
Develop the skills experienced artists use every day. Drawing is really about learning to see, and this course is devised to guide you through the various methods of understanding what we see and recording it on paper.
The lessons and exercises will cover a range of subject matter including figures and faces, landscape and townscape, and primarily still life.
The structure will be 4 – two week projects, comprising of practical demonstrations and some fun/challenging exercises to guide you through some of the fundamental disciplines required to produce a satisfying drawing.
Drawing elements – Mark-making for line, tone and texture.
Proportion – Methods for achieving accuracy.
Perspective – Much simpler this term, create the illusion of distance.
Figures and Faces – A special for this term, with a model for reference.
I’m very conscious to provide a good environment to learn something which can seem daunting. The atmosphere is always relaxed and supportive, and failure is not only an option but positively encouraged! It’s the best way to learn.
The lessons are designed to let each artist push for their own improvements at their own pace. This term I will also be introducing pen & wash, a perfect gateway to painting.
I recommend buying a sketchbook and a few pencils. HB and 3B at the least. All other materials are provided along with tea and coffee (including decaff) and biscuits if you’re lucky.
